On not knowing

I like being in Malaysia and all, but the weird thing about being here is that I'm in a total information vaccuum. The day I went to Cyberjaya and saw the crows -- which was a Wednesday -- there was a road block on the road heading eastward out of Putrajaya. But being Putrajaya, the traffic caused by the blockage wasn't all bad. At most, I was delayed by 15 minutes. Talking about it to Carol later, she says she has no clue what that was about. But she did say a protest was being planned at Parliament Hill that coming Saturday, although it might be cancelled if elections were announced.

Fast forward to yesterday, and Hooman asks me on the phone about Indians giving out roses, and I'm all, "What?" and he drops the subject and we start talking about other things instead.

Now I've put two and two together, and it turns out that Hooman was referring to the Saturday protest, which turned out to have taken place after all. And because I don't subscribe to Malaysiakini and never remember to read Screenshots, I was totally clueless that it even happened at all.

Now, I will go to great lengths to dig out information if I want to. As it happens, I'm not terribly interested in street protests because it's a little too proletarian (stealth power plays are much more interesting). But I still want to know about them, and I wish the newspapers in Malaysia covered this sort of thing.

I'm just saying. I know it's not the done thing, but it sure as hell would make things less dull.
