No. 1: This morning, Hooman and I drove over the Tappan Zee bridge, which was my first time even though I've lived in the New Jersey/New York area for ages. It's a theme of clean lines -- neat and white. And if you look back as you're crossing, you get a view behind you of the houses on the cliff, nestled amid feathery trees like in an art naïf painting. It's a very, very pretty bridge.
I found this photo of the Tappan Zee bridge on Flickr, which I though was nice.
No. 2: Also today, we saw Simply Amazin', which is a documentary about the '86 Mets. Watching the documentary reminded me that the saying "it ain't over 'til it's over" came from baseball, attributable to Yogi Berra (not a Met!), who was also to have said, "I couldn't tell if the streaker was a man or a woman because it had a bag on it's head."
What I love about the 1986 New York Mets: "Everybody loves a bad boy, and this was a team full of bad boys." I don't know if I like bad boys, or just the idea of a bad boy. But bad boys are definitely cool. Carol [hi] likes bookish boys; I like boys who read books, but not necessarily bookish boys.
Also from watching the documentary, it brought to mind that New York was full of grit back then, not like now. When I first set foot here in 1993, it was already on the upswing and by 1997 they had Disneyfied 42nd Street, which used to be the red light district. I get the sense that there was something sad and hard -- and perversely, more loveable -- about New York in the old days, like in Midnight Cowboy. Now, New York is just too serious. I think why I like the '86 Mets is because they didn't take themselves too seriously, but still managed to be scary and unbeatable -- aarrrr!
